Vehicle Overview

Mercedes 280SL W113 Manual for sale

The Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda W113, produced from 1963 to 1971, is a renowned two-seat roadster. Designed by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, its distinctive slightly concave hardtop roof earned it the "Pagoda" nickname. The W113 was the first sports car to incorporate a "safety body," featuring a rigid passenger cell and crumple zones, which set new standards for vehicle safety at the time. Powered by an inline-six engine and equipped with features like radial tires and a well-balanced chassis, the 280SL offered both superb handling and comfort, making it a favorite among car enthusiasts.

Exterior: This Mercedes W113 280SL Pagoda is painted in a classic and elegant silver, a color that always suits a Mercedes, especially a classic model. The Pagoda is no exception; this color enhances the car's lines and gives it a slightly more modern look compared to other non-metallic colors. Additionally, silver is a low-maintenance color that does not show dirt or micro-scratches as much. This particular car is in nice, daily driver condition. The paint job is good but has a few marks; we believe the car was repainted about 15-20 years ago. The chrome trim is also, for the most part, in good condition. A defect to note is a couple of holes in the front and rear bumpers from bumper horns, as the car was previously in America. Thankfully, the bumper horns, side markers, and headlights have been replaced, giving it the full Euro-spec appearance.

Interior: The Mercedes W113 Pagoda has a simple yet beautiful interior. It is a design with few details, but you can tell that every part is made with great craftsmanship, is well thought through, and is of high quality. The Pagoda also offers excellent seating, even for slightly taller drivers, unlike British roadsters from the same era. This 280SL features a gorgeous dark blue leather interior that provides an excellent contrast to the silver exterior. It is a nice color that adds a bit of fun and character to the car without being too light, which would make it hard to maintain. The leather in the car has just the right amount of wear and looks excellent. The seats are in great shape, and the car has dark blue carpeting to match. The rest of the interior is also in good condition and working order.

Engine and Mechanics: The 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine in this Mercedes 280SL is impressive. It is a reliable powerplant that produces 170 hp and great torque. The engine has a satisfying exhaust note and strong acceleration. Driving a Mercedes Pagoda feels like it is ahead of its time; the car feels solid, reliable, and is easy to drive with power-assisted steering. The four-speed gearbox is also smooth, with distinctive shifts. Mechanically, the car is in good order, with a large service having been carried out in the summer of 2024. During this service, the car was thoroughly inspected, and any minor issues were addressed.

History and Documentation: This Mercedes 280SL W113 Pagoda was originally sold new in America. In 1993, the car was brought to Germany, where it underwent a restoration. In 2021, the car was exported to Sweden, where it has remained with its current owner. The current owner has maintained the car and ensured all necessary servicing has been performed. The car comes with comprehensive documentation of its history in Germany and Sweden.
