Vehicle Overview

Volvo P1800 1962 for sale

Exterior: In 1961 and 1962, the Volvo P1800 was available in three colours - white, red, and metallic grey. It seems like the grey colour was not very popular back in the sixties. When you look in the P1800 registry, many of the cars that were born grey are today red or white. I think the metallic grey colour suits the Volvo P1800 very well and makes it look even more like a proper GT car. With the original red interior, it becomes the perfect colour combination. All the exterior chrome pieces on this Volvo P1800 were redone by Backmans in the eighties. A company well-known in Sweden for delivering high quality chrome during this time. As you can see in the images, the car is today rolling on a set of painted wire wheels. The Volvo P1800 was available with wire wheels from the local dealers during this period. The wire wheels supplier then was Robergel. The design of the Robergel wheels does not suit me and for that reason I have fitted another type of wheels with hubs and a set of brand-new Michelin 165R 15 86S TL XZX. This makes this classic Volvo again look a little bit fatter and more Grand Touring. The original rims and flat style hubcaps fitted with Michelin tyres are still with the car. In the mid eighties, this Volvo had a light restoration, and the front fenders and the rocker panels were replaced. After this, the car was repainted and it still looks very nice today with small traces of wear. There is no rust or bubbles. Underneath the car is also very healthy looking. New rubber has recently been fitted in the doors and around the quarter windows.

Interior: The interior of a classic Volvo is very important to me and it should preferably be as original as possible. It is the soul of the car. In this car, the dashboard and all instruments are just gorgeous. The rpm gauge is a notorious problem specially on these early Volvo P1800 cars. Therefore, on this car we have fitted a clever little device so that the rpm reading on your gauge is adjustable. It is now set correctly and if you ever change the timing, the rpm gauge can be adjusted accordingly. The original carpet was just too bad to be saved, so a new carpet in original colour has recently been fitted. The seat covers were also broken, so we replaced them with new leather instead. All other panels in the car are still the original and in very good condition. A time period radio is fitted to the dashboard. I think it works too. A new parcel shelf has been fitted and all black cover panels in the trunk are new.

Engine: The original Volvo P1800 B18 engine runs very nicely and the gearbox and overdrive are perfect. Here is some of the work done in 2021/2022.

  • Full service and adjusted valves
  • Head completely rebuilt with new valves and guides
  • Electronic ignition system from 123 Ignition, adjustable with Bluetooth
  • Changed all radiator hoses and fitted correct clamps
  • New heat valve for interior heater
  • Changed bushings in the rear end
  • New alternator
  • Rebuild clutch cylinder
  • New exhaust system including headers
  • New water pump
  • The chrome spoke wheels are optional, original set of wheels with hubcaps

So, from a technical standpoint the car is very much up to date. It drives and feels like a 1961 Volvo P1800 should. My experience with many of these cars is that the driving experience does not live up to the looks. However, on this car everything feels very good and for that reason I have been very careful in the work that has been done to it.

History: This car was sold new here in Sweden. It is registered here as a year model 1961.  But, with chassi number 5591, it should be at least a year model 1962. There is a copy of the first registration document and it shows that Manager Nils Sederholm in Helsingborg took delivery on the 20th of March 1963. The next owner was Sten-Johan Stensson in Hasslarp the 18th of April 1968. The next owner in 1988 and directly again in 1989. Then, it came to a lady who kept the car until I bought it in May 2021. From 1989 until today, the car was always in traffic but was standing mostly in the heated garage. All the Technical Inspection documents are collected. From 1989 until today, the total travel is less than 10,000km. Original perfect handbook, original jack and spare and original workshop manuals can go along. If you have a Volvo P1800 you would like to sell, please let me know here.
