Vehicle Overview
Alpina B3S E46 2003 for sale
The E46 Alpina B3 S represents the absolute pinnacle of this generation's lineup, serving as the upgraded, highly sought-after facelift top version. Despite its incredible capability, it remains a heavily underrated masterpiece, often overshadowed by its aggressive BMW M3 sibling – even though it offers a more exclusive, torque-rich grand touring experience. Its rarity is staggering, Alpina produced only 142 total examples of the B3 S Coupé, with only a small fraction specified with the purist 6-speed manual gearbox. When compared to sports cars from a similar era like the Porsche 996 or 997 Carrera, the contrast in production scale is immense; while the ultra-rare Alpina manual coupé was produced in the double or low triple digits worldwide, Porsche pumped out tens of thousands of Carreras, making the 911 massively more common on the secondary market while simultaneously commanding a much higher, less accessible modern price tag.
Exterior: The car is finished in Sapphire Black Metallic and sits on its original Alpina alloy wheels wrapped in good-condition tires. The wheels are in excellent shape with no curb damage at all – a major plus given how expensive genuine Alpina wheels are to replace or refurbish.
All the factory Alpina exterior elements are present, showcasing how fantastic the signature styling looks on the E46 coupé body. Key details that set the Alpina B3 S apart from a standard BMW include the distinct front spoiler, subtle rear lip spoiler, signature multi-spoke wheels, classic pinstripe decals, and a lower, sportier ride height.
The body is completely rust-free and the underside is in great condition, which is increasingly rare for E46-generation cars today. As a highly sought-after, late-production facelift model, the car features updated styling that distinguishes it from earlier versions. The facelift brings a revised front end with sweeping, modernized headlights, wider and more sweeping kidney grilles, a reshaped front bumper, updated Alpina wheels, and raised side indicators. The front bumper and grille have been freshly repainted, and the car has recently been fitted with brand-new, original BMW headlights, leaving the exterior in truly excellent condition.
Interior: Inside, this B3 S features a black leather interior – a highly desirable and rarer choice, as many Alpinas from this era were specified with cloth upholstery. The cabin is well-equipped for everyday usability and comfort, featuring cruise control, heated memory seats, and the charming pop-out electric rear quarter windows. Everything functions exactly as it should, including the ice-cold air conditioning.
Subtle, bespoke details constantly remind you of the car's pedigree, from the signature Alpina stripes on the floor mats and the blue-backed gauge cluster to the individual production plaque mounted on the headliner. It is an incredibly inviting, usable cabin that feels genuinely special without being over-the-top.
Engine and Mechanics: The E46 Alpina B3 S drivetrain is based on the robust architecture of BMW’s cast-iron S52 inline-six, extensively re-engineered by Buchloe. Displacement was increased to 3.4 liters using custom Mahle pistons, paired with a reworked cylinder head, a high-flow intake manifold, a bespoke exhaust system, and unique Siemens ECU tuning. The result is a healthy 305 horsepower and a wonderfully smooth, linear delivery that provides exceptional low-end torque.
This particular example features the highly desirable 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox, paired with Alpina’s optimized shift linkage for a mechanical, precise gear change. The chassis benefits from Alpina's bespoke suspension setup, utilizing specially tuned springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars to achieve the perfect compromise between long-distance comfort and sharp body control.
Ultimately, there is far more mechanical substance to the B3 S than meets the eye. It is a deeply rewarding driver's car, balancing a lovely exhaust note and effortless power delivery with a highway-ready ride. This is true Alpina magic, offering superb value for a vehicle this rare and historically significant.
History and Documentation: This E46 Alpina B3 S was sold new in Germany in July 2003. During its initial years there, it recorded three stamps in the original service book from authorized BMW dealers, covering its history up to 121,987 km. In 2006, the car was imported to Sweden, where it was maintained strictly on schedule with a transparent, continuous history evidenced by clear MOT mileage records.
In 2018, the car returned to Germany, where its authorized BMW and Alpina specialist service history continued seamlessly. The car is now offered freshly serviced, complete with all its original books, two sets of keys, and a comprehensive file of accompanying paperwork.
