Triumph TR5 PI for sale
The Triumph TR5 is a rare and iconic British sports car, with only 2,947 units produced between August 1967 and September 1968. Developed as a successor to the TR4, the TR5 retained the attractive Michelotti-designed body but featured a significant performance boost with its 150 bhp, fuel-injected 2.5-liter straight-six engine. This made it the first British production sports car to use fuel injection, setting it apart from the carbureted TR250 version sold in the U.S. Despite its short production run, the TR5 laid the groundwork for the TR6, carrying forward its powerful engine and innovative features, including independent rear suspension, a hallmark of the TR series' evolution.
Exterior: In my opinion, the Triumph TR5 is an underrated model. When thinking of the most beautiful 60s convertibles, cars like the E-Type and Pagoda may come to mind. However, I believe the TR5 deserves a place among them in terms of both looks and performance. The TR5 we are offering is finished in classic Signal Red, and its appearance has been enhanced by wider wire-spoke wheels. These wheels are fitted with period-appropriate Vredestein Classic tires. The exterior is in good driver’s condition, with the paintwork showing very few marks and good panel gaps. Most of the chrome trim is in nice condition, though a few pieces show slight pitting.
Interior: The Triumph TR5's interior is simple and minimalistic. The seats are upholstered in black vinyl, a durable choice for a convertible, as open-top cars are more exposed to the elements. For added safety, this TR5 has been equipped with seatbelts. It features a thick sport steering wheel that provides great feedback. The door cards and other trim pieces are in good condition, as is the carpeting. The wood paneling has some cracks in the lacquer, and the soft top, while easy to operate, is somewhat worn. In the trunk, there’s a good amount of space, and if you remove the spare wheel, you’ll see that the car is healthy and free of corrosion. Under the hood, the car also presents very well.
Engine and Mechanics: The Triumph TR5 was a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the TR4, moving from a carbureted inline-four engine producing 105 hp to a Lucas fuel-injected inline-six producing 150 hp. The TR5 not only offers impressive power but also an amazing sound, especially in this car, which has been fitted with an aftermarket stainless steel exhaust system. The 2.5-liter straight-six engine is paired with a four-speed transmission with overdrive, allowing the car to cruise at high speeds with remarkably low RPM. The overdrive engages and disengages smoothly with a button on the shifter and is available on both third and fourth gear. In recent years, the car has received mechanical work, including a clutch replacement, new engine and transmission mounts, bushings, coolant hoses, and a wheel alignment. And the gearbox was rebuilt at the same time.
History and Documentation: This car was originally sold by Autoimport in Glostrup, Denmark. The car remained in Denmark until 2020, when it was exported to its current owner in Sweden. It comes with its import papers, Swedish MOT papers, service invoices from the current owner, the original handbook, two sets of keys, and the old Danish registration document. Additionally, the car is delivered with a heritage certificate, verifying that it is a matching-numbers example.
